5 Reasons Why We Need Another Social Media Platform

In a world with a multitude of social media platforms already out there on the web. Why did we decide the world could use one more?

There’s no denying the power of social media and its ability to harness the forces of the internet and network effects to build some of the world’s biggest and most powerful companies around today.

So when looking to help nonprofits with some of their top challenges:

  • Reaching out to a broader audience

  • Engaging with younger generations

  • Tapping into new streams of revenue

… the choice was relatively obvious. Why not use the power of social media to help drive social good?

The social internet, in particular social mobile apps, are the communication forum of choice for Millennials and Gen Z. With video storytelling being its preferred medium. What better way to help nonprofits raise awareness and engagement with their young audience.

Social media advertising is the primary source of revenue that is driving this multi billion industry. Why not use this model to help nonprofits find a supplementary source of funding year round?

The nagging question however is, Will the world accept yet another social media platform? … Will they download one more app? Create and sign into one more profile? And regularly check one more feed?

We believe the answer is Yes for Flixxaid for the following 5 reasons:

1. Meaningful time spent online

Is online life taking over our real life? Maybe. The latest Digital 2019 Report shows that we spend around 6 hours a day online or a total of 100 days a year for every internet user. With half of that spent on our mobile devices. Amazing…

Although entertaining, or if lucky, sometimes educational or insightful. Many times I find myself regretting that time spent, or feeling more empty than when I first started.

The hope is, if we can produce a platform that can focus our screen time on something positive and with purpose, we can harness that collective energy to help achieve more as humans and give more meaning to all that time spend online.

2. Socially responsible in every way

Many of the big social media corporations have been scrutinized lately for their handling of users’ personal data. As we started building this company, we made the decision to create a business that is as socially responsible as the purpose of the app.

Our goal is to be as transparent as possible with user privacy and the use of user personal information. Although we intend to collect basic data such as name, email, age, location, and gender. The intent will be clearly stated in our policy, and ensuring all information requested is optional.

The purpose for collecting this info is three fold:

  1. To ensure users meet the age requirements, as the app is only intended for users 13 years or older.

  2. To provide the participating nonprofits macro-level demographics of their followers. This allows them to better understand their outreach, which will in turn help them run their organization better. The information provided will not allow the nonprofit to identify data associated with an individual person, only a group of minimum 100 or more followers/supporters to asserts anonymity yet still provide useful insights.

  3. To help provide more targeted sponsored ads, so that we benefit both the sponsors to find the right audience, and the audience to help them discover products and services applicable to them. This way watching ads in support of a nonprofit is a more enjoyable and hopefully a mutually beneficial activity.

Whether it does do business in the regions or not, Flixxaid intends to abide by GDPR (EU) and California state privacy laws coming into effect in 2020.

Flixxaid also has future ambitions to achieve B-Corp certification, and supportive of the mission of the Media Rating Council.

3. A new canvas for creativity

A social good platform doesn’t have to be boring. Flixxaid aims to be a place where creativity can flourish.

The XXtend feature is only the first example of how Flixxaid aims to both differentiate itself and to stand out as a unique platform for creative content. XXtending a user’s post not only shows your support for them by spreading their video to your network, but also allows users to append their own response, which in turn can also be XXtended. This allows chaining together a series of videos. Although we have ideas of how users can take advantage of this feature, we made a concerted effort not to prescribe and potentially limit how a feature may be used. But rather leave the possibilities open for users to come up with their own creative uses.

4. Sponsored ads for Social Good

As we looked at existing social networking platforms. Their main source of revenue comes from advertising. In fact it is estimated that over $51.3B annually was spent on social media advertising last year, with that figure expected to double over the following 5 years by 2023.

With one of our goals is set to help nonprofits find new channels of revenue. Our initial approach was to tap into this abundant ecosystem by building a platform for advertisers to optimize their engagement with a target audience through video ads. While at the same time improving their brand image by participating on a platform that sponsors causes and charities they are proud to support. Thereby attracting premier advertisers and nonprofit corporate sponsors.

Since Flixxaid redirects most of its ad revenue to the supported charities, this could translate into a healthy supplementary revenue stream for the related nonprofits.

5. Network effects that spread Positivity

The internet can be a sad and stressful place, with many negative source. Flixxaid aims to balance this part of the internet by being a positive source on the web, and to spread that positivity through the power of network effects. A place to learn more about the great work that nonprofits do, and support them in their honourable quests.

There’s no question that we are expecting a lot from the internet by introducing a new social media platform. But our hope is that the web will be accepting of Flixxaid as a familiar yet evolutionary place where we can all find some meaning and purpose in our online life. A place where positive attention translates to financial aid for selfless organizations best equipped to turn financial support into solutions for our most critical human problems.
